Solo exhibition. Artist and curator: Conchi Alvarez. Semana Santa (Holy Week) of 2016
Semana Santa, Spain’s Holy Week, has been an extremely prominent theme in my work for many years. I first started with one series, however it has grown so much, that it no longer constitutes of one, but three series (at least for now…)! My first series related to the Brotherhood of ‘Precious Blood’ in Valladolid; the second connected with the Brotherhood of ‘Visitation’ in Málaga; and the third, which I started in 2015, relates to all three Brotherhoods that exist in Estepona.
From the very beginning, the ‘brothers’ of the Brotherhoods have been a pivotal focal point of interest for me; their role as anonymous figures, and the fact that without them it would be impossible to conduct the religious processional performance carried out each and every year is fascinating. What’s more, the religious and emotional exaltation that each image of them produces is extraordinary, revealing total devotion grounded in the bond between brother and faith, as well as a similar bond between each and every one of the brothers, constituting a companionship made up of invisible, powerful ties, that although persist from year to year, are renewed each and every Holy Week: a week of Passion. Because of this, the brothers have become the celebrated icons in my paintings.
This exhibition belongs to my third series. Unlike my previous two series, where only one Brotherhood was featured in each, this one features and represents all three Brotherhoods in Estepona. Most of the artwork on display are sketches as well as acrylic paintings on paper; instant snapshots of these new ‘Icons of Passion’. Some are more worked than others and some represent reproductions of the intense moments experienced on the streets of Estepona during Spy Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.
Also on display are acrylics on panel representing scenes that instantly captured my interest and had to be painted. For me, the scenes were paintings within themselves. The characters of Estepona’s Passion here flow onto the paper or panel oblivious to their protagonism: bearers of each brotherhood, altar boys, the processional float bearers, women in their ‘mantilla’ veils, musicians and finally priests, each of which are captured due to the sheer chance of being in the right place at the right time.
One piece of artwork that stands out specifically, is the piece named “Guided”. It was in fact used as the poster for Estepona’s Holy Week in 2016 and was commissioned for the Association of Brotherhoods; an honour to accept and create. “Guided”, embodies the essence of my vision of this Holy memorial rite of passage. This acrylic on panel represents the nature of Faith, in specific, the Faith of brothers, through a scene of simple composition in which two brothers, one leading and the other being guided, blindfolded, walk in front of the official float on a night lit by powerful orange and light red lights. The rest of the scenery, the shop windows, the chairs and spectators and the penitents of the procession have disappeared, overshadowed by the powerful light.
It is Good Friday and “Guided” leaves the church blindfolded by a mask; a sinner, being kept away from the light, he is putting all of his faith into his guide, his fellow brother, who carries a single candle guiding them forward. The whole composition is marked by the fact that the light emitted from the candle is Jesus Christ, the origin and meaning behind Holy Week and of being a brother. Christ came into the world to pay for all our sins with his Passion and Death, and for that reason his cross is also represented in the composition in the form of the penitents shadows. Each of them is a part of Jesus and therefore the painting projects that. The light that surrounds the scenery reveals the living processional rite of passage of each of the brothers. It is projected onto each one of them, generating a reflection of their faith, and completely enveloping that of the person being guided.
